Set in the final days of the Ryukyu Kingdom, when the monarchy was threatened by the Meiji Restoration, this production portrays the life of Kamekawa Oyakata, who fought harder than anyone else to preserve the kingdom amid the tumultuous shifts of the era. Originally performed in 1996 (Heisei 8), this marks its first appearance at our theater. Synopsis
Written by Shima Shōtarō, this is a tale of passionate men caught up in the events surrounding the so-called “Ryukyu Disposition.” Under the emperor system, the Meiji government pushed forward national unification by force. Led by Matsuda Michiyuki, the official in charge of implementing the Ryukyu Disposition, they marched into Shuri Castle, effectively putting an end to the 450-year history of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Fierce debates arose between Kamekawa Oyakata—leader of the “Shina” faction that opposed the abolition of feudal domains—and Giwan Oyakata, who represented the “Yamato” faction. Ultimately, Kamekawa could not halt the tide of change, and King Shō Tai of Ryukyu was taken to Tokyo…
