What is "Tsuikin"?
The technique known as "Thuikin" is unique to Ryukyu (Okinawan) lacquerware. It involves mixing lacquer with various pigments, spreading this mixture out, and either pressing it into molds or cutting out patterns to adhere to the surface of lacquerware.
In the 15th century, a Portuguese diplomat wrote about lacquerware boxes decorated with chinkin techniques in the "Description of the East Asian Countries," indicating that this art form was already being produced at that time.
The unique red lacquer and mother-of-pearl inlay techniques of Ryukyu have continued to embellish Okinawa since the era of King Sho Hashi (1400s).
