Folk Performing Arts “Traditions of Hateruma Island”
In Okinawa, diverse folk performing arts have been passed down through generations in each community.
This performance highlights the traditions of Hateruma Island, the southernmost island of Japan.
Hateruma Island has preserved its own unique performing arts within the Yaeyama Islands. In particular, the Mushāma festival, held on the middle day of the lunar Bon season, is filled with prayers for abundant harvests and ancestral remembrance.
This program will mainly showcase the folk performing arts presented during Mushāma.
