The National Theatre Okinawa opened in January 2004 in Urasoe City, Okinawa, with the aim of preserving and promoting Okinawan traditional performing arts, especially Kumiodori, a nationally designated Important Intangible Cultural Property. The theatre also serves as a hub for cultural exchange in the Asia-Pacific region, making use of Okinawa's unique geographical and historical characteristics.
